We decided on a USB-IR dongle, and off went his employee to Nehru Place to pick one up. I ended up with no-name dongle, made in China and ``compatible with W*nd*ws 98, ME, XP and 2000''. <p>The IrDA dongle has the following specifications as per its cover: <itemize> <item>Compatible with the IrDA 1.1 specification <item>Compatible with the USB 1.1 specification <item>FIR 4Mbps <item>MIR <item>SIR <item>ASK 56Kbps </itemize> <p>Some investigation showed that the dongle has USB device ID <bf>df7/620/10</bf>. Further searching on Google revealed that this is the (in)famous MA620 dongle, based on the MA600 IR chipset and the PL2303 USB-serial converter. <p>Chalo, at least one knows what it is, half the battle over. Now to get the beast to actually work with Linux... <sect2>MA620 and Linux, or There and Back Again <p>Thanks to the <htmlurl url="http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/irda-users" name="the irda-users mailing list"> and frantic searching on Google, I managed to get the dongle working with Linux at 9600bps (bits per second) within a day or so. The various modules that you need to accomplish this are: <itemize> <item>uhci_hcd <item>pl2303 <item>irda <item>irtty-sir <item>ma600-sir <item>ircomm-tty </itemize> <p>From what I understand, the -sir modules are the USB versions of the corresponding serial IR modules. My original script to enable the dongle was: <p><verb> ================================================================ #!/bin/sh # # Minimal stuff required to get the MA620 USB IRDA dongle recognised by # the kernel. Version 1 -- works with unpatched kernel, but only at # 9600bps. modprobe uhci_hcd modprobe pl2303 modprobe irda echo 9600 > /proc/sys/net/irda/max_baud_rate modprobe irtty-sir modprobe ma600-sir modprobe ircomm-tty irattach /dev/usb/ttyUSB0 -d ma600 -s exit 0 ================================================================ </verb> <p>As you would guess, the echo 9600 line limits the rate of the IrDA dongle to 9600bps. This is because the MA620 driver is still being worked on and there's a small bug that causes problems at higher speeds. <p>On submitting this problem to the irda-users mailing list, Martin Diehl suggested a small change in the kernel. I quote him: <quote> Simply try editing the file linux/drivers/net/irda/ma600-sir.c. In line 197 (2.6.7-vanilla) change the "#if 1" to read "#if 0" and rebuild your module. By chance this will help you out because the speed chance was likely working, just the verification failed. </quote> <p>Being part of the ``Top 10 Clueless About Kernel List'', I blindly followed his suggestion and rebuilt the kernel, and lo and behold, suddenly I could use the dongle at higher speeds. <p>With Martin's change in place I've so far used the USB port at up to 115200bps without problems. The speed still kind of sucks when transferring MP3s to the phone (more about that later), but baby, let me tell you, it's definitely an improvement over 9600bps! <p>Here's the new script for enabling the MA620 USB IrDA dongle with a patched kernel 2.6.7: <verb> ================================================================ #!/bin/sh # # Minimal stuff required to get the MA620 USB IRDA dongle recognised by # the kernel. Version 2 -- works only with kernel patched with Martin # Diehl's #if 0, at up to 115200bps. modprobe uhci_hcd modprobe pl2303 modprobe irda modprobe irtty-sir modprobe ma600-sir modprobe ircomm-tty irattach /dev/usb/ttyUSB0 -d ma600 -s exit 0 ================================================================ </verb> <p>All that has happened is that the line limiting the IR rate to 9600bps before loading the remaining drivers has vanished. L33t, huh? :) <p>After you start IrDA (and assuming everything works OK), you should see something like the following when you put the phone (with cover open) in front of the dongle and run <tt/irdadump(8)/: <verb> ================================================================ 14:19:49.808390 xid:rsp 3f8d7c1b > e3afec86 S=6 s=3 mail hint=0400 [ Computer ] (20) 14:19:50.205921 xid:cmd ffffffff < e3afec86 S=6 s=* A760 hint=c124 [ PnP LAN Access IrCOMM IrOBEX ] (21) ================================================================ </verb> <p>The files in /proc/net/irda have the following contents, which I cannot decipher but presumably someone can, otherwise they wouldn't be there: <p><verb> ================================================================ *** /proc/net/irda/discovery: IrLMP: Discovery log: nickname: A760, hint: 0xc124, saddr: 0x3f8d7c1b, daddr: 0xe9877945 *** /proc/net/irda/ircomm: *** /proc/net/irda/irias: LM-IAS Objects: name: Device, id=0 - Attribute name: "IrLMPSupport", value[IAS_OCT_SEQ]: octet sequence (3 bytes) - Attribute name: "DeviceName", value[IAS_STRING]: "mail" *** /proc/net/irda/irlap: irlap0 state: LAP_NDM device name: irda0, hardware name: ttyUSB0 caddr: 0x20, saddr: 0x3f8d7c1b, daddr: 0x000000 win size: 0, win: 0, line capacity: 0, bytes left: 0 tx queue len: 0 win queue len: 0 rbusy: FALSE mbusy: FALSE retrans: 0 vs: 0 vr: 0 va: 0 qos bps maxtt dsize winsize addbofs mintt ldisc comp tx 9600 0 64 1 12 0 0 rx 9600 0 64 1 12 0 0 *** /proc/net/irda/irlmp: Unconnected LSAPs: lsap state: LSAP_DISCONNECTED, slsap_sel: 0x0, dlsap_sel: 0xff, (IrIAS srv) Registered Link Layers: lap state: LAP_STANDBY, saddr: 0x3f8d7c1b, daddr: 0xffffffff, num lsaps: 0 Connected LSAPs: *** /proc/net/irda/irttp: ================================================================ </verb> <!-- **** 0 **** --> <sect>Applications that work <p>All the applications that I've tried have been over IrDA using the MA620 USB dongle. Apparently the A760 is also OBEX-compliant, so I could use standard OBEX tools to perform file transfer to and from the phone. <p>The primary OBEX tools I used are: <itemize> <item>OpenOBEX (OBEX libraries) <item>ObexFTP (an OBEX file transfer application) <item>eSquirt (another set of OBEX applications and libraries) </itemize> <p>The versions of each that I used are given in <ref id="packages" name="Host Environment"> section above. <!-- **** 1 **** --> <sect1>Sending files to the phone <p>Sending files from the computer is fairly simple once you have the connectivity in place. You must install OpenOBEX and the ObexFTP package, RPMs (and presumably DEBs) for which are available. <p>Once ObexFTP was installed, I ran the command: <verb> ================================================================ obexftp -p /path/to/file ================================================================ </verb> <p>and the designated file got transferred to the phone. You can send multiple files in one command -- just add all the names to the <tt/obexftp/ command line. <p>The A760 opens up a file save dialogue for each file that you send it, giving you the option of changing the name and the directory (erm, ``folder'') if you desire. I have transferred images, MP3s and plain text files using this method. <!-- **** 1 **** --> <sect1>Sending vCards <p>It's possible to send vCards to the A760 over the IR link, again using <tt/obexftp(1)/. Just make sure that the line terminators in the vCard file are CR-LF and not plain LF -- the phone won't recognise the file with lines terminated with plain LF. If you have lots of vCards with plain LF line terminators you can use the unix2dos utility to convert them to CR-LF format. <p>I didn't play around much with this feature, but the one vCard I did send (as a file with extension .vcf) opened up a Address Book dialogue on the phone. Presumably you can fill your address book with vCards this way. If you send the same vCard twice you get 2 entries in the address book. <!-- **** 1 **** --> <sect1>Sending files from the A760 to Linux <p>I used the eSquirt tools for receiving files in Linux from the A760 phone. From the phone, sending a file is easy: keep the stylus pressed on a file (or address book entry) and select ``Share'' from the pop-up menu. Select IrDA as the share transport and, if everything goes OK, the file will be sent to the Linux box. <p>Things weren't so simple on the Linux end. First I had to find a program that would receive files over OBEX. Obexftp wasn't the solution, since it would initiate a connection and get a file, rather than waiting for a file send from the phone. Finally I discovered the <tt/squirt_getfile_big/ program in the eSquirt test suite (directory <tt>esquirt-v3/esquirt-v2/tests</tt>. This program waits for file sends from the remote device (the phone in our case) and displays information about the file after it is successfully received. <p>In order to send file from the A760, run the <tt/squirt_getfile_big/ program on Linux then start the file send from the A760. Sending a simple text file (<tt/test.txt/) containing the words ``This is a test.'' from the A760 looks like this: <p><verb> ================================================================ [root@mail /tmp/esquirt-v3/esquirt-v2/tests]# ./squirt_getfile_big Waiting for e-Squirts over Obex... Skipped header c3 Got a e-Squirt or Beacon !!! -> label = [] -> url = [] -> type = [] -> length = [15:d] -> xml = [This is a test.] -> filename = [test.txt] (Ascii) -> seq = [0x0] with options : xml=undefined ; model=undefined protocol=Obex ; transport=IrDA Obex IAS=[OBEX] ; Obex session=Yes Obex Target=undefined Version : squirt_common v2.6 - 24/5/1 ================================================================ </verb> <p>Unfortunately, as built, <tt/squirt_getfile_big/ doesn't save the files it receives. So I had to hack file saving into the source. Here's the patch: <p><verb> ================================================================ --- squirt_getfile_big.c-orig 2004-08-01 19:26:11.928557907 +0530 +++ squirt_getfile_big.c 2004-08-01 19:24:49.391744883 +0530 @@ -45,9 +45,20 @@ gi_flags * ret_flags) /* Not used */ { int ret = 0; /* Reply Header not set */ + FILE *f ; debug_squirt(fields, options, extra); + if ( ( f = fopen ( extra->filename,"w" ) ) == NULL ) + { + fprintf ( stderr , "cannot open %s for writing\n" , extra -> filename ) ; + } + else + { + fwrite ( fields -> data , fields -> datalen , 1 , f ) ; + fclose ( f ) ; + } + #ifdef BROWSER { unsigned char buf[512]; /* The command */ ================================================================ </verb> <p>Minimalistic patch that just saves the file under the name that the A760 sends, in the current directory. He'd also made a lot of other Hindi songs into MIDI but I can't find those on the 'net -- if you do, please let me know. <p>Installing a MIDI file as a ringtone on the A760 is trivial -- get the file onto the phone somehow (over IrDA, WAP, whatever) and then just assign it as a ringtone. Works out of the box. <sect1>MP3 Ringtones <p>You can also use MP3 files as ringtones on the A760 -- well, you can play 'em too :) Since the typical MP3 is horrifically large, I used <htmlurl url="http://audacity.sourceforge.net/" name="audacity"> to (a) clip out 30 seconds from tracks I like and (b) downgrade them to 56Kbps so that they occupy less space. <p>Audacity kind of rocks, and it took me less than an hour to figure out how to edit tracks and save them in a different format (Manual? Any thoughts or suggestions welcome. <!-- **** 0 **** --> <sect>III-party apps (Midlets) <p>Since the A760 is running J2ME, it can handle most generic J2ME applications (also called <em/midlets/) available on the 'net. I've downloaded and tried about 50 so far, at various levels. <p>Good places I found for J2ME apps are: <itemize> <item><htmlurl url="http://java.mob385.com/en/test.shtml" name="mob385.com"> <item><htmlurl url="http://midletzone.com/index_th.html" name="MidletZone.com"> (in Thai) <item><htmlurl url="http://www.javamobiles.com/midlets/" name="JavaMobiles.com"> <item><htmlurl url="http://j2me-software.com/repository/software.jsp?selectedDevice=0&" name="j2me-software.com"> <item>...and of course, <htmlurl url="http://www.google.com/search?q=free+midlet+OR+midlets" name="Google"> </itemize> <p>Watch out for platform-specific midlets (there seem to be an enormous number of Siemens-specific midlets floating around, for example). They won't work at all on the A760. <p>The most irritating feature of some midlets is that they expect to run on a phone with a numeric keypad. Since the A760 doesn't have a keypad at all, many midlets that expect to find number keys just don't work at all. However, I did manage to get Spruce Tetris working -- it has both keypad and touchscreen input options :) On the other hand, the killer app -- Floyd SSH doesn't work due to this limitation. Anyone good at hacking J2ME who can fix Floyd SSH to take touchscreen input? Half my kingdom and my daughter's hand in marriage would be a bit excessive, but I would definitely stand him/her a glass of beer :) <!-- **** 0 **** --> <sect>Caveats <p>Here're the things I found disappointing about the A760, in no particular order. Some are fixed features of the phone itself, while others are software or format issues. <!-- **** 1 **** --> <sect1>Memory <p>That 8MB memory limitation with no scope for upgrade is teh suck. I've managed to stay within the limit so far by ruthlessly deleting files on a regular basis, but I can see that a phone with just 8MB isn't a long-term solution for a (hehheh) power user like me. If you just need phone and PDA functionality, however, 8MB should serve you well enough. <!-- **** 1 **** --> <sect1>No HTML browser <p>Yup, that's right. The A760 comes with a WAP/WML browser, but there's no built-in HTML browser. I believe that the A760's souped-up cousin, the A768 does have one, but that's still a bit far away for me. <p>There seems to be only one HTML browser midlet available on the 'net, and that's proprietary. I downloaded the demo version to check it out, and it seems to work sort of OK except for some really stupid scrolling (no scroll bars). Since it's proprietary, you'll have to figure out the name yourself :) <!-- **** 1 **** --> <sect1>No synchronisation with Linux <p>As noted above, you can't use standard sync tools to synchronise the A760's address book, calendar, etc with Linux. I'm sure it will be available one of these days, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed and waiting. <!-- **** 1 **** --> <sect1>Speed <p>In general, the A760 is reasonably fast. However, it does show appreciable delays in the following situations: <itemize> <item>Starting to play a MIDI or MP3 ringtone for an incoming call. <item>Handwriting input. You have to wait after each character you input. <item>Multi-tasking -- if you're doing more than one thing the response will deteriorate. </itemize> <!-- **** 0 **** --> <sect>Conclusion <p>I am enjoying owning the Motorola A760. It's a nice toy and performs whatever functionality it does have very well. I spend half my life on the phone, so the included hands-free cable and the speaker-phone mode are godsends. Being able to personalise ringtones is also cool -- for example, my ``Friends'' group is alloted <em/21st Century Schizoid Man/ by King crimson -- pretty apt, I think :) <p>There are a number of nice-to-have features that I'm looking forward to, primary among them being synchronisation with Linux and a working SSH client. <!-- **** 0 **** --> <sect>License <p>All rights reserved and Copyright
