5. Ringtones and more ringtones!

5.1 MIDI Ringtones

I had oodles of MIDI files lying around on my computer -- does anyone remember a time when MP3 didn't exist and MIDI and MOD were the only sound formats available? I'm really not too sure about the copyrights on most of these files, except for the Hindi tunes my friend Dr Opeh has composed here. He'd also made a lot of other Hindi songs into MIDI but I can't find those on the 'net -- if you do, please let me know.

Installing a MIDI file as a ringtone on the A760 is trivial -- get the file onto the phone somehow (over IrDA, WAP, whatever) and then just assign it as a ringtone. Works out of the box.

5.2 MP3 Ringtones

You can also use MP3 files as ringtones on the A760 -- well, you can play 'em too :) Since the typical MP3 is horrifically large, I used audacity to (a) clip out 30 seconds from tracks I like and (b) downgrade them to 56Kbps so that they occupy less space.

Audacity kind of rocks, and it took me less than an hour to figure out how to edit tracks and save them in a different format (Manual? There's a manual?) With that in place I now have rock track excerpts working fine as ringtones on the A760.
